Sutil, in common with most F1 drivers began his racing career in Karting. In 2002, he raced in the Swiss Formula Ford 1800, winning all ten rounds of the season from pole position.
Sutil raced with moderate success in the Formula BMW ADAC championship in 2003, and in 2004 had a disappointing year in the Formula 3 Euro series. In 2005, he was runner-up in the series to Lewis Hamilton. He spent 2006 racing in Japan and won the All-Japan Formula Three Championship.
Sutil was a test driver for Midland F1 Racing in 2006. (The team changed its name to Spyker Cars early in the 2006 season)
Sutil was promoted to the race seat in 2007, but the car was appalling. He did however out-race his teammates. (Spyker replaced the other team driver twice in the season). His, and Spyker's, best result was 8th at the Japanese GP.
In 2008, the Spyker team became Force India, and Sutil was retained. The car was once again terrible and Sutil did not score any points in the season.
Force India made huge progress in 2009, and both drivers produced better results, for example, at the Italian Grand Prix Sutil took his career best second in qualifying and finished fourth in the race. He also recorded the fastest lap of the race, his first in Formula 1 and the first fastest lap recorded for Force India.
Force India made steady but unspectacular progress in 2010, the car performance improved, and consequently the team finished seventh in the championship, up from 9th in 2009. Sutil, did better than his teammate, Vitantonio Liuzzi, and was rewarded with a drive for 2011.
Sutil must be very conscious that Nico Hulkenberg is now Force India's test driver. Hulkenburg did well driving for the Williams team in 2010 and is considered by many to be deserving of a drive in 2011, and will doubtless be seeking to unseat Sutil. It is difficult to judge if Force India wish to compete with the big teams, or are content to be in the middle of the grid, however, Sutil must produce good points for the team, or certainly finish ahead of di Resta if he is to maintain and improve his chances of a better drive.
