D'Ambrosio had some success in Karting, he was the three times Belgian champion, and won the Junior Monaco Kart Cup in 2000, and won World Cup Formula A in 2002.
In 2003, he moved to Formula Renault and won the Belgian Formula Renault (1.6 litre) championship, and in the same year was fourth in the German-based Formula König championship.
Moving in 2004 to the French Formula Renault 2-litre series, he finished fourth in the final standings and was top rookie. He also started seven races in the Eurocup. He switched to the Italian Formula Renault Championship in 2005, finishing fourth, also starting six Eurocup races. In 2006, he drove at the highest level in the Formula Renault hierarchy, the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, for Tech 1 Racing, but left the series after four rounds having not scored any points. Moving to the Euro 3000 series for the second half of the season he finished fifth in the final standings.
In 2007 d'Ambrosio became the first champion of the new International Formula Master series winning five races.
Moving to the GP2 Series in 2008 he had limited success finishing in eleventh in the championship, with a best finish of two second places, in the Asian winter completion he was runner up to teammate Kobayashi, but failed to win a race.
In the 2009 main GP2 series, he finished in ninth and was twelfth in 2010, but did not compete in all the races. He was the Renault F1 test driver in 2010 and did quite well when given the opportunity to test.
It is very hard to judge if Jerome d'Ambrosio will have a long term career in F1, he is certainly starting at the bottom, but will gain valuable experience without any expectation on his shoulders.
