Sébastien Buemi joined a select group of drivers when he scored points in his first race of F1; at the Australian GP 2009, driving for Toro Roso, he finished in eighth place but was promoted to seventh following Lewis Hamilton's disqualification.  In 2011 he will once again be driving for Toro Rosso.

In common with most F1 drivers, Buemi started his racing career in Karting, moving in 2004 to the German Formula BMW, finishing in third, he stayed for another season and was runner up in 2005.

Buemi raced in the Formula three Euroseries in 2006, finishing in a modest 12th place in the championship, however, in 2007 he was runner-up behind Romain Grosjean.

Buemi replaced an injured driver at the ART team for the GP2 race in Monaco 2007, he performed with some distinction finishing in seventh place.

In 2008 Buemi race in the GP2 Asia series for the Arden International team, finishing in second place. He continued with the team for the main summer series, ending the season in sixth place. Buemi was also Red Bull racing's test and reserve driver for the 2008 season.

Toro Rosso offered Buemi a drive for the 2009 season and he performed reasonably well. In addition to scoring points in the Australian GP Buemi added to his tally by finishing eighth in China, seventh in Brazil and another eighth in Abu Dhabi. Finishing the season in sixteenth was enough to secure the drive for 2010

The 2010 season was mixed for Buemi, he scored points in four races: Monaco, Canada, Europe and Japan, but also had five retirements. He finished the season with 8 championship points in 16th place, just a little better than his teammate Jaime Alguersuari.

Buemi was very fortunate to escape unhurt from a very spectacular crash. At the Chinese GP, during free practice, a front suspension wishbone broke, and the front wheels broke away while he was traveling at 300 km/h (190 mph). The car slide along the barrier and as the front wing came off, many spectators assumed the young Buemi would be badly hurt. Amazingly, he emerged unscathed.

Buemi will race again for Toro Rosso in 2011.
