Future Engines

While there is currently an engine freeze that effectively bans constructors from developing new engines until 2013, there is much speculation on the engine regulations once the freeze is lifted. After the results of the Italian Grand Prix, where Mercedes-powered cars once again dominated the starting grid, the FIA agreed to re-equalize the power of the different engines for the 2010 season. This re-equalization, however, will only be achieved by turning down the output of engines, specifically the Mercedes engine, that are proved to be more powerful than the other engines. This was requested by all the Formula 1 teams in order to make sure the engine freeze has not frozen in a competitive advantage for Mercedes-powered cars.

The FIA and FOM have made statements indicating that both want F1 to be more environmentally friendly and, at the same time, be on the front line of future engine development. There is also speculation of a return to turbocharged engines based on comments made by the FIA on finding ways to effectively harness waste heat energy from the car's exhaust.
